Welcome from the Director

Welcome or Welcome Back to the University of Tennessee!

The Office of Multicultural Student Life (MSL) and the Frieson Black Cultural Center (FBCC) have been an integral part of the University of Tennessee for over 40 years and are here to support the growth and development of UTK students.  Every day we strive to accomplish our mission of promoting academic success, equality and leadership development of students through programs and services that holistically address cultural, educational, and civic growth. We are committed to providing quality culturally relevant programs and services to promote the successful transition, persistence, and graduation of students.

The Office of Multicultural Student Life and the Frieson Black Cultural Center is a “home away from home,” where students can gather for lunch or a meeting in our student lounge, library or conference room; or, seek out some quiet study time in one our tutorial suites.  We are a space where all members of our community can explore, appreciate, and celebrate their identities, similarities, and differences through a variety of facilitated workshops, cultural programming and leadership development opportunities.  We not only invite you to visit us at the Frieson Black Cultural Center, but we hope that you will visit our website and view our calendar for programming updates.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said that “the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”  As we continue to face challenging times in our country and across college campuses nationwide, I am hopeful that as Volunteers we will stand together and engage in a positive civil discourse that leads to an enhanced understanding that encourages us to respect, value, affirm, and appreciate each and every member of our campus community.  Hate must not win.

I invite you to continue to read our weekly electronic newsletter in order to stay abreast of what is happening in MSL and around campus.  We look forward to seeing you at the FBCC soon!

Get excited for Spring 2020, and Go VOLS!
