Carl Cowan Scholarship 2010-2011 Recipients

Dadrien Barnes
Dadrien is a junior majoring in Accounting with a collateral in Finance. Dadrien currently serves as a Resident Assistant, math tutor at the Black Cultural Center, First Year Studies Peer Mentor, and will serve as a BA 100 Peer Mentor in the fall. This year, he has been active with the Black Cultural Programming Committee, the Love United Gospel Choir, and Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society in the College of Business Administration while maintaining an exceptional GPA.

Tyrone Dobson
Tyrone is a sophomore majoring in Public Relations, and has a double minor in business and psychology. Tyrone serves as the Assistant Director of the Love United Gospel Choir. He is also a member of both the Minority Enhancement for the University of Tennessee, and the Tour Guide groups of the Student Recruiters. Tyrone is also active in the Tennessee Association of Student Councils where he works as a leadership summer camp counselor and volunteer with local middle school student councils. In addition to these extracurricular activities, he balances his academic work remarkably well.

Allison Brittany Goo
Allison Brittney Goo is a senior majoring in Journalism and Electronic Media. She is also pursuing minors in business administration and communication studies. Brittney is involved in the Chancellor Honors Program, and is also a member of several other honor societies on campus. In her spare time, she enjoys volunteering with organizations such as Special Olympics and Habitat for Humanity. After graduation, Brittney hopes to pursue a career in media management or online journalism. Her journalism experience includes writing and copyediting for The Tennessee Journalist and volunteering at The Volunteer Channel. This summer, Brittney will be interning at WMC-TV 5 in Memphis, TN.

Sharice Hill
Sharice Hill is a freshman majoring in Psychology. She strives for the best, and is always looking for ways to improve her performance. Prior to attending UTK, Sharice was involved in Junior Civitan, an organization devoted to improving the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities, during middle school. She was active in FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) during her senior year in high school. Sharice was a peer mentor for the special education children at Kenwood High School in Clarksville. She is devoted to helping and improving the lives of everyone around her, and has a great outlook for her future.

Shireena Weston
Shireena is currently a senior majoring in Social Work. She will be graduating in May 2010 and will be continuing her education as she starts the Advanced Standing Masters of Science Social Work program in Summer 2010. Throughout her undergraduate experience Shireena has taken an active part in the College of Social Work’s Bachelor of Science in Social Work Student Organization (BSWO). Over the past few years she has served in various positions for the organization including Community Service Officer, Relay for Life Team Captain, and Professional Development Co-chair. She has also served as a student leader the last two years in Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship. While being heavily involved with these organizations and even being in leadership at her church as she has served as the Youth Choir Director for the last year and a Youth Leader the last two years, she has maintained a high GPA, making the Dean’s List every semester of her undergraduate career.

Andrea Williams
Andrea is a sophomore majoring in Industrial Engineering. She is currently an active member of Diva Opals, where she helped in the production of the first annual Beauty Beyond Measure Scholarship Pageant and is currently transitioning into the position of Historian for the National Society of Black Engineers. Despite her demanding major, Andrea has managed to remain on the Dean’s List consecutively while participating in various community service opportunities, such as TeamVols’s Alternative Spring Break. Once Andrea graduates, she intends to attend graduate school in hopes of beginning her own engineering firm.
